Kids, Colds & Sick Season

Just when your child seems to be feeling better, it happens again.

Another runny nose. Another cough. Another call from school asking you to pick them up because they're running a fever.

If you're a parent, you know the routine all too well.

Between school, daycare, extracurricular activities, and everyday life, childhood illnesses can feel almost impossible to avoid during the fall and winter months.

And while many of these illnesses are a normal part of childhood, that doesn't make them any less stressful for families.

At Paradigm Primary Care & Wellness, we believe pediatric care should offer more than treatment when your child is sick. It should provide parents with guidance, reassurance, and a trusted relationship throughout every stage of childhood.

Why Does It Feel Like Kids Are Always Sick?

Children, particularly younger children, are exposed to many respiratory viruses as they interact with classmates, friends, and family members.

Their immune systems are still developing experience with these infections, which is one reason young children may experience frequent illnesses.

Common seasonal illnesses include colds, influenza, RSV, and other respiratory infections.

It's also possible for a child to recover from one infection and catch another shortly afterward, making it seem as though they've been sick continuously.

Although frequent minor illnesses can be expected, parents should never feel that they have to dismiss symptoms simply because getting sick is common.

Persistent, unusual, or worsening symptoms deserve attention.

When Should You Call Your Pediatrician?

One of the most challenging parts of parenting during sick season is knowing when to seek medical care.

A mild runny nose in an otherwise active child may not require an office visit. But certain symptoms deserve closer evaluation.

Consider contacting your child's pediatrician if:

  • A fever persists, returns, or is accompanied by concerning symptoms.

  • A cough worsens or continues longer than expected.

  • Your child is drinking less than usual or showing early signs of dehydration.

  • Ear pain, significant throat pain, or other new symptoms develop.

  • Your child has an underlying condition that may increase their risk of complications.

  • Your instincts tell you something isn't right.

Some symptoms require immediate care rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Trouble breathing, blue or gray lips, significant dehydration, unusual difficulty waking, or seizures warrant emergency evaluation. A baby younger than three months with a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher needs immediate medical assessment.

Knowing the difference between a symptom that can be monitored and one that needs prompt attention is an important part of keeping children safe.

Not Every Illness Needs an Antibiotic

When your child is uncomfortable, it's natural to want something that will help them feel better quickly.

But many common childhood respiratory illnesses are caused by viruses, which means antibiotics will not treat the underlying infection.

Depending on the illness, treatment may focus on hydration, rest, symptom relief, or specific medications when clinically indicated.

For some infections, such as influenza, antiviral treatment may be considered, particularly when started early and for children at increased risk of complications.

A pediatrician can help determine which treatments are appropriate and when additional testing or follow-up may be necessary.

The goal isn't always to prescribe something. It's to provide the right care for your child's individual needs.

The Value of Having a Pediatrician Who Knows Your Child

Every child is different.

Some have a history of asthma or allergies. Others experience recurrent ear infections or have medical conditions that require closer monitoring.

And some children simply have a harder time recovering from certain illnesses.

When your pediatrician knows your child's medical history, growth patterns, development, and previous health concerns, that information becomes part of the conversation.

Instead of approaching every illness as an isolated event, your provider can consider how symptoms fit into your child's overall health.

That ongoing relationship can also make it easier for parents to ask questions, discuss concerns, and make informed decisions about care.

Pediatric Care Should Support Parents Too

Being a parent means making countless decisions about your child's well-being.

And sometimes, what you need most isn't another internet search.

It's a conversation with someone who understands your concerns and can help you determine the next step.

At Paradigm, our concierge-style pediatric care is designed to create more opportunities for those conversations.

Led by Dr. Meredith Brazell, our pediatric services focus on building meaningful relationships with children and families through personalized, attentive care.

From sick visits and developmental milestones to preventative health and everyday parenting questions, our approach is centered on understanding the whole child.

Because children deserve healthcare that grows with them.

And parents deserve to feel heard along the way.

Healthy Kids Start with a Strong Foundation

While no approach can eliminate childhood illnesses, families can take practical steps to reduce the spread of infection and support overall health.

These include encouraging regular handwashing, prioritizing age-appropriate sleep, offering balanced nutrition, staying home when sick according to current guidance, and discussing recommended immunizations and other prevention measures with your pediatrician.

Routine well-child visits are equally important.

They give families an opportunity to discuss growth, development, nutrition, behavior, school concerns, and preventative care outside of an illness.

Pediatric care isn't just about helping children feel better today. It's about supporting their health as they grow.
